Can Biomass Pellets Reduce Emissions in Coal Plants?
Biomass pellets are biomass fuels derived from solid waste, agricultural residue, and forestry residue. Some of the commonly used raw materials in the production of biomass pellets include sawmill residue, tree barks, branches, leaves, rice husk, sugarcane bagasse, coconut shell, cotton stalk, etc. Biomass pellets are used as biofuels for commercial and residential heating, power generation, cooking, and other applications. Biomass pellets are clean burning and renewable sources of fuel, which generally emit less particulate emissions. Over 40% of electricity worldwide is generated by coal-fired power plants. Coal has the largest carbon dioxide emissions per unit energy of all fossil fuels, and coal-fired power plants are a major source of man-made carbon dioxide emissions. Coal-fired power plants generally have a life of 20 to 50 years and represent a huge global capital investment. It is not economically feasible to retire these coal-fired power plants and replace them with greener...
